The greatest festival of world music, arts and dance. The vast majority of the shows are free and, as if that wasn't enough, it is held in Caceres. The city boasts some of the most well-preserved medieval and Renaissance heritage. In fact, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The two main stages at the festival are in Plaza Mayor and Plaza San Jorge, in the heart of the old city centre. Many other open-air activities are held. For instance, there are craft markets, workshops and street entertainment offering a fabulous fusion of world culture. The WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) festival emerged as a project dreamed up by British singer Peter Gabriel to showcase different musical rhythms. It is held at many venues around the world and, in Caceres, it has been held every year since 1992.
