Every year Cáceres in Extremadura celebrates this religious festival recreating the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Popular music and processions of religious statues flood the city's monumental site, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The processions (solemn parades that accompany the religious statues) parade their intricate sculptures around the historic centre. Some of the processions date back to the 15th century and have hugely valuable religious figures. It is very common to hear ‘saetas' (Flamenco-style sacred songs) throughout the route. The songs, dedicated to the statues, are often sung by anonymous spectators.
