Cadiz fills with fun and humour during this celebration where it is impossible not to have a laugh and almost obligatory to dress up! The spectacle is a demonstration of ingenuity and creativity. One of the main events it the Teatro Falla Competition. Carnival groups perform funny songs on news events from the last year. It last around a month and ends with the Grand Finale on the first Friday evening of Carnival. After the competition, the party moves out onto the streets. There are two large cavalcades with thousands actively participating. Everybody dresses up and only creativity and humour are important. You will see individual, couple and group costumes. Many of these groups perform they own repertoire through the streets. They are dubbed the ‘illegals' – an example of creativity from this celebration. Groups that take part in the official competition also perform their pieces in the historic centre. The Carrusel de Coros is a highlight and held on holidays.
