These are the annual “fiestas” of Castellón de la Plana and commemorate its origins. The main events include the “Pregó”, the procession known as “Las Cañas”, the “return”, which includes the “Gaiatas” parade, and the procession of the Penitents. The “Pregó” is a colourful parade that heralds the start of the festivities. The procession known as “Las Cañas” involves crowds of people all heading to the Santa María Magdalena chapel, where the original settlement once stood that eventually became Castellón de la Plana. The “return” is when the festivities head back to the city and includes the “Gaiatas” parade. They are huge, spectacular monuments full of lights paraded through the streets along with the queens of the fiestas. The procession of the Penitents is held at night, when the religious statue known as El Crucificado de la Purísima Sangre is paraded through the streets. Concerts, firework displays, floral offerings, gastronomic tastings and other fun events round off this week of festivities.
