Festivities in honour of Santiago Apóstol

Description

This is the festivity in honour of Santiago (Saint James the Apostle), the patron saint of Spain and of Galicia. The celebrations begin about ten days before the Day of Saint James the Apostle on 25 July. The event known as 'The Apostle's Fire' takes place on the night of 24 July, and consists of a sound and light show that transforms the Plaza del Obradoiro square. There are firework displays, regional dancing, and music from Galician bagpipes. The most spectacular feature is the multidimensional projections on the cathedral itself, which appear to bring it to life. Another tradition is to set fire to a firework castle representing the cathedral's façade. The day of 25 July is an opportunity to see the famous 'Botafumeiro' in action. This is an enormous incense burner that is swung vigorously over the cathedral's lesser transept, filling it with the scent of incense. These festivities are also marked by exhibitions, concerts, street performances, fireworks… If the day of Saint James falls on a Sunday, the year is known as the Compostelan Holy Year.
