Santa Cruz in Tenerife celebrates carnival with a spectacular fiesta of fun and exuberance. Its hallmarks are rhythm, colour, flamboyance and luxury. And the guest at this world-famous celebration is you. There are some events that simply cannot be missed. For example, the Gala for the Election of the Carnival Queen. This is a spectacular competition in which the candidates appear dressed in enormous fantasy costumes with decorations that may weigh more than one hundred kilos. Friday is the day of the parade announcing the start of Carnival, involving thousands of people and dozens of musical groups who march through the streets for hours. This is followed by three days in which the city is transformed by a spirit of jubilation and becomes the scenario for performances by Carnival troupes. On Carnival Tuesday the parade arrives at the Coso bullring, in a vast procession thronging with rhythm and colour. Wednesday is the Burial of the Sardine. This is the concluding parade in which the sardine –the symbol of the spirit of carnival– is ceremonially burnt. There is still time at the weekend for the Piñata Chica, with entertainment, dancing and parades.
