La Mare de Déu de la Salut Festival
From Sep 7, 2017 to Sep 8, 2017
These are the main festivities of Algemesí, in the province of Valencia, combining tradition, religion and culture. It has received UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity designation. The most important events are the three processions that take place on 7 and 8 September. They are accompanied by traditional music and dance. There are also spectacular “human towers” known as “Muixeranga”. The first procession is called Las Promesas (The Promises). It is held on 7 September and includes children performing short religious plays. On 8 September, in the procession known as La Mañana (The Morning), you can see “giants” that represent King Jaime I of Aragon and his queen. Later in the day, there is another procession full of biblical figures. The festivities attract huge crowds and over 1,400 people take part in the processions. Such involvement can also be seen in the ornately made costumes and accessories worn in the processions.
