Signs and Objects: Pop Art from the Guggenheim Collection

Exhibition - Modern art
Bizkaia

The Bilbao museum is exhibiting 40 iconic works of art by the most famous Pop Art artists, as well as by other more contemporary artists who have also made their contribution to this form of art, which celebrates or produces a humorously exaggerated imitation of popular culture and mass consumerism. Not in vain, Pop Art, which focused on the style of comic strips, ads or billboards of the time, achieved institutional acceptance after the exhibition “Six Painters and the Object” organised in 1963 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Initially, the first Pop Art exhibition held in the US was going to be called “Signs and Objects”, which is the name of the exhibition currently being held at the Bilbao museum, making an original and often humorous contribution using Pop Art references, such as those of artists: Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol or Mimmo Rotella. Soft shuttlecock, a gigantic badminton shuttlecock by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, dominates the space.
