El Castillo cave
This cave forms part of the labyrinth hidden in the interior of Monte del Castillo, and is one of the few caves remaining open to the public. El Castillo cave contains one of the most important series of rock paintings and symbols in European prehistory. You'll find examples of cave art from the Acheulean period to the Bronze Age along its 18 metres depth. What can you see on your visit? The oldest Palaeolithic art in the world, and an exhibition of 275 figures. A chance to go through the cave and marvel at its walls marked with 50 symbols and over 180 silhouettes of animals, particularly horses, stags, bison and dogs (relatively uncommon in the Cantabrian area). You'll find the human figure represented in the form of a hand, with over 50 examples. The colours used for the drawings are red, black and yellow.
