El Pendo Cave

Description

El Pendo cave

The first thing you'll notice is the monumental and imposing size of this cave, which is 45 metres wide and 22 metres high. The entrance to the cave alone occupies an area of 600 square metres, and was used for human habitation. This cave has been the object of several archaeological explorations and numerous studies that have helped shed light on human behaviour in ancient times. The El Pendo cave has been declared a part of our World Heritage. What can you see on your visit? A major collection of ornamental items associated with early occupation by Homo Sapiens. But the most outstanding feature on the interior is the 'Frieze of Paintings', a panel measuring 25 metres in length and visible from any point in the main chamber. It depicts around twenty figures painted in red, including twelve examples of hinds, a goat, a horse and several different shaped symbols.
