Las Monedas Cave

Description

This is one of the few caves located in Monte Castillo that is open to the public, in addition to being the longest. Visitors can explore 160 out of a total of 800 metres. When the cave was discovered it was originally called the Cueva de los Osos ('Bears' Cave'), but after finding a trove of coins ('monedas') dating from the time of Ferdinand and Isabella, it was changed to its current name. The Las Monedas cave has been declared a part of our World Heritage. What can you see on your visit? The geological spectacle of stalactites, stalagmites, hanging terraces and columns. You can see the cave paintings in a small side chamber very near the entrance to the cave. They represent 17 figures of animals (horses, reindeer, goats, bison and a bear) and a series of symbols and lines that are more difficult to interpret. These drawings date from 10,000 years B.C.
