University of Alcalá de Henares, or College of San Ildefonso

Description

Created by Cardinal Cisneros and known by the name of the College of San Ildefonso this is the most important monument in Alcalá de Henares, the birthplace of the writer Miguel de Cervantes. It is considered to be the foremost 'city of learning'. This University is one of the finest examples of the Cisneros style. During your visit you'll be able to tour its former classrooms, cloisters and courtyards, as well as the courtyards of the Philosophers, Santo Tomás de Villanueva and the Trilingüe. This last one is today the site of one of Spain's Parador hotels. Another space that should on no account be missed is the chapel of San Ildefonso, one of the oldest parts of the University, with a funeral monument dedicated to Cardinal Cisneros. This has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The presentation of the Cervantes Prize for Literature in the Spanish language takes place on 23 April in the University of Alcalá.
