Suso Monastery in San Millán de la Cogolla

Description

This was the site of the first words ever written in Spanish and the first poems penned in our language. The Suso Monastery is the source of the first Spanish romance writings, known as the 'Glosas Emilianenses'. The writer Gonzalo de Berceo wrote the first poems in the Spanish language in this monastery, and his mortal remains are buried in the Romanesque chapel. Its cellars, the oldest part of the monastery, are particularly interesting. San Millán de la Cogolla is buried in the central cellar, and on the site of his tomb today stands a funerary monument. Tradition has it that the Seven Princes of Lara, the protagonists of mediaeval legend, are buried in the tombs in the cloister. Declared a part of our World Heritage by the UNESCO, access is restricted by private car but visitors can reach the site by minibus.
