Roman Amphitheatre

Description

A visit to the amphitheatre in Tarragona will make you feel you're back in ancient Rome, in a place of battles between gladiators and wild animals. The amphitheatre was also the site chosen to execute those condemned to death. Together with the circus and the theatre, these were the buildings used for entertainment in Roman cities. The arena in the amphitheatre has the characteristic round shape typical of this type of construction, with ditches beneath. This amphitheatre is the site of the martyrdom of San Fructuoso, and in his honour a Visigothic basilica was created on which was subsequently built the church of Santa María del Milagro. The Roman amphitheatre in Tarragona has been declared a part of our World Heritage by the UNESCO.
