Poblet Monastery

Description

Poblet Monastery is one of the finest examples of religious architecture in Catalonia, and was among the most outstanding cultural centres of the 12th century. Visitors will find a walled enclosure with a church, a palace and a royal pantheon containing the tombs of the Kings of Aragon. On the inside there are two museums: the Poblet Museum and the Restoration Museum. The first is housed in the Palace of King Martin and contains some architectural remains of the monastery, ceramic objects, paintings and items of precious metalwork. The Restoration Museum is located in the former dormitory of the retired monks. This contains drawings of Poblet by Maria Ribas and photographs taken before and after the restoration of the monastery. There are also pieces of great historical value such as fragments of the main altarpiece in the church.
