Buen Retiro Park

Description

You're sure to have heard of this park in the heart of Madrid, and one of the city's most popular and busiest spaces. Its origins date from the reign of Philip IV and the building of the Palace of El Buen Retiro. The various kings made their own modifications to this building and today only the structure known as the Casón del Buen Retiro remains. This park was formerly used as an area for recreation and religious contemplation, but today offers a vast range of options for entertainment, including exhibitions, a boating area, various sporting options, fairs… What will you see? A large lake stocked with ducks and fish where you can rent a rowing boat and take a turn on the water, the monument to Alfonso XII, the Casa de Vacas where you can see temporary exhibitions, the Rosaleda rose garden, and a garden in the French style containing one of the oldest trees in Madrid. In the Velázquez and Crystal Palaces you'll always find some cultural activity to enjoy. One curious fact is that this is the only park to have a monument dedicated to the devil. You'll find it at the fountain of the Fallen Angel, and it depicts Lucifer's expulsion from Paradise.
