Candelaria

Tenerife

The Atlantic town of Candelaria is located 17 kilometres from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, capital of the province of the same name and the island of Tenerife.

The popular, seafaring atmosphere of its streets can be felt on almost every corner, in careful harmony with modern leisure facilities. The volcanic origins of the island can be seen in its beaches of dark sand, which contrast beautifully with the vegetation on the nearby mountains. The Basilica of the Virgen de la Candelaria, patron of the Canary Islands, is its most emblematic building. The festivals in her honour, which are held in August, commemorate the appearance on the shores of Güímar of a Gothic carving in the 14th century. The first people to worship it and the original settlers on the island, the Guanche, are represented in nine bronze sculptures outside the basilica. It is also worth visiting Candelaria during the festivals of El Carmen and Santa Ana, in the month of July.
