Elorrio

In 1964 Elorrio was the first village in Vizcaya to be receive the Spanish Cultural Property designation.

The village is 41 kilometres from Bilbao, in the Duranguesado Valley, surrounded by mountains. It is very interesting for its palace architecture. There are many palaces and ancestral houses, built in stone and masonry, to be found in the historic centre. The village reached its heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries. A gentle stroll will allow you to admire the elegance of these buildings and to discover the 69 stone coats of arms to be found on their walls, witnesses to the ancestry of their owners. Have a look at the Berriozabaleta Fountain as well, of Inca origin, and the nine stone crosses form the 16th century dotted around the village. Elorrio happens to be the Vizcaya village with the most crosses of this type.
