Port of Orio, Gipuzkoa (the Basque Country)

Orio

Gipuzkoa

Orio is a small fishing town in the province of Guipuzkoa, set in a privileged location. Its old town has the Property of Cultural Interest designation.

The old town of Orio, "Goiko Kale", was built in medieval times - in the 12th century. It starts at the Church of San Nicolás and goes up to the surroundings of the Chapel of San Martín. The streets are steep, stepped, almost labyrinthian, climbing on the rocks. Coats of arms, well-cut sandstone, balconies of bright colours, cobbled streets… this town has a medieval flavour. Orio also stands out because of the rich landscape composed of the sea, the estuary and the mountains. All kinds of sports can be practised in the town and in the surrounding area, such as fishing, hiking, cycling, kayaking and rowing.
