What to see We suggest two key sights: first a visit to the Hercules tower, the only Roman lighthouse in operation and declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO; and second, the Emilia Pardo Bazán House-Museum, the home of the Galician writer, a key figure in Spanish literature. Its streets are lined with fine example of Romanesque architecture. One of the highlights is the church of Santiago, which is also the oldest in the city. Beaches and active tourism The old part of the city gives onto the seafront. Opposite the port you'll see the typical houses with their white-painted glassed-in balconies, and at one end the castle of San Antón. A walk along the seafront promenade will bring you to the broad beaches of Riazor and Orzán, and on your way you can visit the Domus or House of Man, and the Finisterrae Aquarium, one of the most important aquariums in Spain. Don't miss the opportunity to take an excursion to see the cliffs, the fishing ports and maritime villages along the Costa da Morte. Gastronomy It's definitely worth trying the delicious fish dishes such as 'caldeirada de rape' (monkfish stew) and hake 'a la gallega', 'empanada' (pastry filled with shellfish or meat), and the excellent Galician veal with its own Designation of Origin.
