What to see Alicante is dominated by the Castle of Santa Bárbara, set atop the Monte Benacantil ridge and offering spectacular views of the coast and the city. At the foot of this fortress stands the old quarter and the Santa Cruz neighbourhood. at its pedestrianised streets will take you to the church of Santa María, Plaza del Ayuntamiento square and the cathedral of San Nicolás. Its museums include particularly the La Aseguradora House-Museum, with works by major artists such as Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso; and the Provincial Archaeological Museum with exhibits from the archaeological site of Manises. Beach and active tourism Alicante has a close relationship with the sea. The beaches of Postiguet, San Juan and La Albufereta are an opportunity to the sun all day whereas the options available in the marine resort include windsurfing, sailing and scuba-diving. Located opposite the port is the Explanada de España promenade, one of the favourite spots of the local residents because of its numerous outdoor cafes and restaurants. Gastronomy Its star dish is its rice, prepared in a multitude of original ways: paella, 'a banda' (rice with fish), black rice (with cuttlefish)… Festivities Its most important festivity is on 24 June and is known as the Night of San Juan. Fire, papier-mâché figures ('ninots'), music, parades and fun and high spirits.
