Aranjuez has been awarded the UNESCO designation of World Heritage Cultural Landscape. What to see Its most famous sight is the royal palace, which has served as the residence of kings and queens. Inside you'll find a large number of rooms including the Queen's Room, the Throne Room, the Hall of Mirrors and a room whose walls are covered with porcelain known as the Porcelain Room. Its tree-lined streets and spacious avenues lead to important monuments like the Mariblanca Fountain, the Teatro Real theatre, the Mercado de Abastos market and the churches of Alpajés and San Antonio. Gardens Another characteristic feature of Aranjuez is its gardens. In front of the royal palace you'll find the Parterre garden with interesting sculptures and fountains. From here you can continue on to the Island Garden and the Prince's Garden where you can stroll among the pheasants and peacocks, or cruise down the Tagus in a glass-bottomed boat. Fiestas and active tourism A good time to visit Aranjuez is during the festival of the Aranjuez Mutiny (declared to be of National Tourist Interest), featuring re-enactments of the assault on the Godoy Palace, bull running and musical performances. One way of getting to Aranjuez from Madrid is on the Strawberry Train (weekends from May to October).
