This is the smallest and westernmost island in the Canarian Archipelago, with a distance of 30 kilometres from one end to the other. Its coastline features cliffs, coves and a large number of natural pools carved out of the rock such as La Maceta and El Charco Azul. Its deep clear waters are perfect for swimming, and scuba-diving enthusiasts will enjoy observing the rich sea bed in El Hierro. You'll be able to see large specimens of manta ray in the waters of El Mar de las Calmas. There are also other outdoor sports on offer, such as paragliding, mountain biking, surfing and caving... or following some of the paths in the Footpath Network to explore the island's pastures, pine forests and fascinating volcanic areas. Although probably the greatest impression is caused by the large number of volcanoes you'll see on the island, precisely 1,000. If you want to learn more about the culture of the island, drop into any of its museums, visit one of the local craft workshops, or head for the archaeological area of the El Julán Cultural Park. El Hierro is a byword for tranquillity, a pleasant year-round climate and an escape from pollution, as it has set itself the goal of becoming the only island in the world capable of being totally self-sufficient thanks to renewable energies. It's also considered a 'Smart Island' as it's the first in the world to offer a free Wi-Fi network.
