Known as the 'island of eternal spring', its 269 kilometres of coastline offer a wide variety of places to enjoy the sun and sea. The shape and colour of its beaches and sand vary in all the different areas of the island. In the north you'll find small coves with black sand and natural swimming pools like Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, whereas the south is home to numerous areas of beach with fine pale sand. The best ones in this part of the island are Costa Adeje, and the lively beaches of Las Américas and Los Cristianos. Scuba-diving here is a unique experience, and a chance to marvel at the unusual sea bed caused by the volcanoes. Of course if you're travelling to Tenerife you can't miss a visit to the Teide National Park, the largest and oldest of the parks on the Canary Islands, where you'll see the highest volcano in Spain: the Teide. One of the most spectacular events on the island is its carnival. It is celebrated in almost all the towns and villages, although the carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the most famous. Make a point of discovering the typical arts and crafts and sampling the 'papas arrugás' (tiny potatoes boiled in their skins), a highlight of the island's gastronomy.
