  • View of Girona cathedral

It is known as the 'City of the Four Rivers'. A walk around its historic quarter with its mediaeval monuments and reminders of its Roman, Arab and Jewish past is a veritable journey back in time.Read more...

What to see If you start at the historic quarter, you'll see a city founded by the Romans in the first century B.C. A testament to this is its original defensive wall, which today you can walk along the top. Other sites to visit include the cathedral, the basilica of Sant Feliu, the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants and the convent of Sant Domènec. It's also fun to lose yourself in the old Jewish quarter or visit the Arab Baths. Before crossing the river to reach the modern part (famous for its Modernist architecture), it's worth stopping at the brightly coloured Casas del Onyar buildings, one of the city's most famous symbols. Active tourism The options include hiking in the Sant Daniel valley and water activities in the rivers. You could also opt to have fun on an orienteering circuit. And what about an excursion to the beaches on the Costa Brava or to the Pyrenees? Gastronomy Girona is home to the restaurant Celler de Can Roca, one of the finest in the world. And the local culinary delicacies include the sweet 'butifarra' sausage, 'ratafía' (a fruit liqueur) and its cavas. Time of flowers There is one particularly special event that takes place in the city, known as the 'Temps de flors'. For ten days, Girona adorns its monuments and courtyards with flowers and artistic installations. Unforgettable.
