What to see We first recommend visiting the Font Major Museum-Cave, a series of underground caverns that once housed various human settlements. To immerse yourself in the local culture, we suggest visiting the centre of El Casal. And be sure to take a stroll around the old town centre, where you can stop off at the Museum of Country Life, the Old Hospital and the Old Church. But the one trip you cannot afford to miss is Poblet Monastery, which lies just a few kilometres away. It is one of the finest examples of religious architecture in all of Catalonia. Gastronomy and vineyards One of the architectural treasures in L'Espluga is the Bodega Cooperativa (Cooperative Wine Cellar), a Modernist building designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and widely regarded as the “Cathedral of Wine”. Today, it houses the Wine Museum. We then recommend trying some of the excellent local wine and cava in the city's many bars and restaurants. To accompany them, what better than such mouth-watering local delights as “coques de recapte” (a dish similar to pizza topped with red pepper and aubergine), char-grilled steak served with vegetable garnish and “ali-oli” (similar to garlic mayonnaise) or typical sweet treats such as “carquinyolis” (a local variation of biscotti made with whole almonds). Active tourism The countryside around L'Espluga de Francolí is an ideal setting for hiking, cycling, horse riding and climbing.
