What to see We suggest starting in Plaza Mayor, home to the City Hall. Then carry on towards Los Guzmanes palace and Casa Botines. The latter was designed by world famous architect Gaudí, who launched the Modernist style in León. Keep going until you reach two of the city's greatest treasures: Firstly, the Cathedral, one of the most fascinating examples of Gothic architecture in all of Spain. You'll be enchanted by the stained-glass windows. Secondly, the Basilica of San Isidoro. It is known as Spain's “Sistine Chapel” of Romanesque architecture. You'll realise why when you see the frescos that adorn the crypt. The last stop on our sightseeing tour is Hostal de San Marcos, which provided accommodation for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James). Today, it is one of the most extraordinary and monumental hotels in Europe. Alongside is the avant-garde MUSAC museum. Gastronomy The district known as “Barrio Húmedo” (Plaza de San Martín and surrounding area) is one of the most vibrant areas in León. It's the best place to go from bar to bar trying the excellent local produce, such as “morcilla” (similar to black pudding). Trips Within easy reach of the city lies a spectacular countryside route: the Cares River Route. Also close to the city you can visit an outstanding landscape dominated by Roman gold mines, now a UNESCO World Heritage site: Las Médulas.
