What to see We suggest starting your sightseeing tour at the city's most iconic site, the monumental complex encompassing La Seu Vella (the old cathedral) and Castillo del Rey (King's Castle, also known as La Suda). From here, you can enjoy some great views. Then you can carry on to Plaza de San Juan and the old Santa María Hospital. In Lleida, you'll find both Roman and medieval monuments as well as more modern ones such as La Paeria or the Palacio de la Diputación government building. There are also various cultural spaces, such as the COU observatory and the Knights Templar Interpretation Centre. And when you need to relax, what better than the city's urban parks or surrounding countryside. Festivities and gastronomy During the fiesta known as l'Aplec de Cargol, 12 tonnes of snails are eaten. Indeed, snails are the main ingredient in a local speciality called “cargols a la llauna”. We also recommend a guided tour of the local wine cellars. Trips. Active tourism Make the most of your stay to visit the Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park and the Romanesque churches in Vall de Boí. In winter, Lleida is a great base camp for visiting famous ski resorts such as Baqueira-Beret. Last but not least, we recommend a ride on the charming “Tren de los lagos”, a fabulous old steam train that takes you through some outstanding landscapes.
