What to see The city is divided into two parts: Villa de Arriba (upper town), and Villa de Abajo (lower town), arranged in a 16th-century Renaissance style and inspired by navigation charts. Indeed, La Laguna was the first non-fortified colonial city and served as a model for other cities that were to be built in America. A stroll through the elegant streets will lead you to such buildings as La Concepción church, the Cathedral, Santa Catalina Convent, Salazar Palace and Lercaro Palace (home of the History Museum). Gastronomy Be sure to try some of the island's specialities, such as “ranchos” (a typical stew), ‘papas arrugás' (a potato dish), ‘mojos' (sauces) or ‘vieja sancochada' (a fish dish) washed down with some fine local wine. Trips This city is also a great place for anyone who loves hiking as it is within easy reach of nature reserves and mountains. Being close to the sea, there are also many excellent beaches, such as El Arenal, which in turn is close to the lighthouse at Punta Hidalgo. Just a few miles away lie the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava. To make the most of your stay on Tenerife, take a trip to Spain's highest peak, Mount Teide, and its National Park.
