What to see The palace known as El Palacio Real de la Granja, once a royal residence, is the area's most famous building. Its halls still have period decor and house valuable works of art. There is also a museum displaying a collection of tapestries. These include a series of Flemish tapestries depicting the Apocalypse. The palace is surrounded by magnificent gardens designed in the Versailles style, with many varieties of plants, white marble statues and monumental fountains such as La Fama, which shoots out 40 meter-high jets of water. And be sure to visit the La Granja Royal Glass Factory, home to the Glass Museum where there is a permanent exhibition as well as other temporary ones dedicated to the art of glass-making and its associated technology. Once inside, you can see both historic and modern pieces, along with the moulds, machinery and tools that were used. Other buildings of interest include the Riofrío Royal Palace, the Royal Mews and the House of Trades. Nature and active tourism We recommend exploring the hiking route through El Monte and Pinar de Valsaín where there are 800 kinds of trees and over 100 species of birds. Gastronomy San Ildefonso's most famous dish is known as “Judiones de la Granja” (a broad-bean dish).
