What to see Strolling through the mediaeval walled streets is a great way to get to know Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The centre of town is home to Plaza del Santo square, where you will find the Cathedral and its beautiful altarpiece, choir stalls and tomb of Santo Domingo. Facing the Cathedral is the Pilgrims Hospital, today a Parador hotel. The Town Hall, Convent of San Francisco and Casa del Santo are located around the square. The Casa del Santo is an information office where you can find out all about Saint James' Way. Gastronomy Try some exquisite local dishes such as Rioja-style potatoes or the famous baby lamb chops with vine shoots. There is no better accompaniment than renowned Rioja wine. Leave room for dessert and try the marzipan or ‘fardelejos' pastries (with almond, eggs and sugar). Festivities The original annual festival of Santo Domingo is held in May, with a pilgrimage, open-air dances and so-called ‘vueltas del Santo' or ‘Saint loops' where a drummer plays through the streets of the town.
