  • Plaza de la Virgen Blanca square

A city with exemplary urban planning, where the mediaeval centre and its historical buildings merge into wide avenues, gardens and tree-lined boulevards that extend the edges of the city.Read more...

What to see We recommend a stroll around the old town and one of its most traditional spots: Plaza de la Virgen Blanca square. The Church of San Miguel is located in the square and houses a statue of the Virgen Blanca (the patron saint of the city). Going through the portico of the church takes you to Los Arquillos area that leads to the modern city and places such as Plaza del Machete, Plaza de los Fueros and the Cathedral of María Inmaculada or New Cathedral. The Old Cathedral or Cathedral of Santa María is in the highest part of the city and served as inspiration to famous author Ken Follet for one his novel ‘World Without End’. The Artium Museum offers an interesting look at modern art. Gastronomy Vitoria-Gasteiz is the perfect city to ‘go out for pintxos’ or tapas. Many of the restaurants are recommended by prestigious gastronomy guidebooks and some have won awards for their pintxos. One of the best times to find out for yourself is in Pintxo Week. Festivities A must-see on the Spanish musical calendar takes place here every July: the Jazz Festival with internationally renowned musicians where every musical style fills the city’s streets.
