Cherry trees in blossom in the Jerte Valley

Valle del Jerte, nature's white

Cáceres

Less than three hours west of Madrid, in Cáceres, discover one of the most stunning natural spectacles in spring in Spain: the cherry blossom in the JerteValley. A unique, dazzling event, where one and a half million cherry trees burst into bloom and turn the landscape completely white.

Cherry trees take centre stage

Eleven villages welcome you to the Valley, north of Cáceres, which we recommend you travel to by car. There are two options for road trips – one circular and the other linear – which will be your guides as you gradually discover the cherry blossom. This natural explosion, which lasts about ten days from mid-March until early April, is the reason for a key date in the local calendar: the Cherry Blossom Festival, which unites culture, music, gastronomy and exhibitions around the tree. But there are also all types of activities organised between March and early May.It is not just the flowers that attract visitors to the valley in this corner of Cáceres. We also recommend that you come in May, when the fruit picking starts. From here until the middle of August, the so-called Cerecera is held: a period full of cherry-related activities like tasting and routes through the countryside. Don't leave Jerte without taking some Designation of Origin cherries, or trying some local specialities like the shepherds' dishes migas or lamb stew.

Adrenaline buzz

As well as spring, Jerte invites you to experience the other seasons. In summer, the rivers and gorges offer you sport and adventure throughout the Sierra de Gredos. Options for the most active visitors include canyoning in the waterfalls at Las Nogaleas and Los Hoyos, while there are calmer attractions such as the natural pools you can find in each village. What's more, in summer and autumn, various routes around the Carlos V and the Jewish quarter, whether on foot or cycling, offer you the chance to explore the countryside around Jerte for yourself. And, of course, don't forget to save a day for visiting the Garganta de los Infiernos. In this impressive nature reserve, formed by water eroding the rock, you can discover the local flora and fauna, or take the plunge in its pools, known as giants' cauldrons.
