Caldera de Taburiente National Park

Description

Why is this part of the island of La Palma in the Canaries known as 'the cauldron'? Because it's an enormous cirque, eight kilometres in diameter (like a cauldron), which –after various volcanic eruptions– has reached a height of almost 2,000 metres above the ground. The landscape, with its waterfalls and archaeological remains, is spectacular. The observation points around the park offer views over La Caldera, La Cumbrecita rocks and the Riachuelo valley What animals can you find there? There are several protected species such as the Bolle's pigeon, the laurel pigeon, and the Madeira pipistrelle. What's on offer in the park? If you want, you can camp out in the park as long as you reserve in advance. To explore the park there are several footpaths with varying levels of difficulty. The simplest is a circular one.
