Real Sitio de San Ildefonso-El Espinar Biosphere Reserve

Description

It lies in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, just 11 kilometres from Segovia and 50 kilometres from Madrid. It is home to Mount Valsaín, one of the largest wooded areas in Spain, comprising Scots pine, oak, holm oak and many kinds of wild flowers. What animals can you find there? Here you will find endangered species such as the Iberian imperial eagle, the black stork and the black vulture. What's on offer in the Biosphere Reserve? We suggest going along to the Boca del Asno recreation area to get information on hiking trails. We especially recommend the self-guided route through the Valsaín mountains. As well as the fabulous scenery, the area is worth visiting to see the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso and its magnificent gardens full of fountains. We also recommend the Glass Museum and, of course, the city of Segovia.
