Gardens of the Puente San Miguel Estate

Reocín

Cantabria

Puente de San Miguel is an old Cantabrian garden, a manor house with the extraordinary charm of carefully tended, age-old trees. For over 300 years, the estate has been owned by the Sanz de Sautuola family. Don Marcelino, who discovered the nearby Altamira Caves, is a member of this family. Occupying more than seven hectares, it has become a sort of botanical garden where visitors can admire magnificent specimens in an incomparable setting. Especially worthy of note are a southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora L.), considered to be the largest in Europe; a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) with a circumference of 5.4 metres; an Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) over 30 metres tall; and a splendid Japanese cedar (Criptomeria japonica).
