Basque Coast

costa-vasca

The coastline of the Basque Country is a natural landscape of steep coasts, estuaries that reach the sea and mountain ranges of beech and oak trees. Its villages have a great seafaring tradition that is evident in their daily life and in the flavours of their gastronomy.

You can also see the oldest functioning ferry bridge in the world, the Vizcaya Suspension Bridge, a World Heritage Site.

Nature

You will encounter unique landscapes such as the Basque Coast Geopark with its Flysch Route from Zumaia to Mutriku, passing through Deba, where you will discover cliffs with more than 60 million years of history. The Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve is also worth a visit. Another exceptional spot is the coast of Bermeo, where you will find the islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. A boat trip in the area will win you over to its magic.

Seafaring tradition

Discover the region's seafaring tradition in small towns such as Bermeo, Lekeitio, Getaria, Hondarribia and Santurzi. One way to experience it for yourself is through the cuisine. We recommend grilled fish, anchovies, “marmitako” and hake with “kokotxas”.
