Rías Altas estuaries

Rías Altas estuaries

rias-altas

These are the estuaries in northern Galicia overlooking the Atlantic. Spectacular cliffs, beaches, fishing villages, lighthouses and legend are the main 'ingredients' of this coastline.

This is an area where you'll find estuaries like those of A Coruña, Ares and Betanzos, Ferrol, Cedeira, Ortigueira… grouped into two large areas: A Coruña and As Mariñas and Ferrolterra. This is a beautiful coastline for touring by road, for strolling or taking a dip on its long stretches of sand and at beaches like Morouzos or Vilarrube.

What to see

The Hercules tower in the city of A Coruña is a World Heritage lighthouse, and one of the many to be found along the route. Other attractions include the monuments of Betanzos, the mansion of Pazo de Mariñán and the shrine of Santo André de Teixido. According to tradition, all Galicians must make a pilgrimage at least once in their lifetimes to San André de Teixido to avoid becoming a troubled soul.

Nature worth photographing

The Sierra da Capelada is home to the some of the highest cliffs in Europe. And Estaca de Bares, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Cantabrian Sea, is one of the best places for bird watching on the continent.
