Outdoor yoga: spaces full of energy in the Canary Islands

Canary Islands

Many people agree that yoga changes the lives of those who practise it. Lower stress, better sleep quality and better academic performance are just some of its benefits. Something very few people talk about, however, is the importance of the surroundings in which the yoga is practised. It needs to be somewhere tranquil and calm, but also full of energy and inspiration. This combination is essential. As such, the endless outdoor spaces in the Canary Islands are perfect for practising yoga. Here are just a few of them:

  • Woman doing yoga at sunset on Duque de Adeje beach in Tenerife, Canary Islands

    Coast of Adeje, Tenerife.

With over 15 beaches within reach (Troya, Bobo, La Pinta...), the south of Tenerife is one of the most energising spots in the whole Canarian archipelago. And no wonder – if you practise yoga here, you'll activate all five senses at once: views of the Atlantic Ocean, the sea breeze caressing your skin, the scent of native wildflowers, the calming sounds of wind and birdsong that make you forget all your troubles... What more could you ask for? In fact, around the beaches themselves there are lots of yoga clubs and studios offering classes directly on the warm sand. Some of these even provide the first class completely free.

  • Wooden jetty on Lobos island, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

    Lobos island, Fuerteventura.

This is the smallest of the Canary Islands, a tiny islet between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. This spot is so peaceful, you'll never want to leave. The atmosphere of the island and its daydream-like views are the essential ingredients for a perfect afternoon (or however long you like) practising yoga on the sand. What's more, due to the islet's volcanic origins, the energy emanating from the endless stones scattered all over the beach creates the perfect atmosphere. We recommend doing the Faro Route to get to know the incredible salt plains filled with local flora and fauna for yourself. Moreover, to reach a state of total relaxation, you mustn't miss out on the chance to practise yoga on a white sand beach, such as La Calera or La Concha, or in the magical coves surrounding them. An authentic connection with nature.

  • View of Los Roques natural monument in Garajonay National Park in La Gomera, Canary Islands

    Garajonay National Park, La Gomera

Unlike the previous two options, this location is for those who would choose forests, vegetation and waterfalls over beaches. The ecosystem of this park, together with its flora and fauna, is completely different from anywhere else in Europe. If what you're looking for is a spot overflowing with energy, La Gomera is full of magical nooks where you can escape from your routine. Walk alone, with a partner or with a group around its endless routes, relax and breathe deeply by one of the different-sized waterfalls you'll find along the way or gift yourself some self-care time to practise yoga in Garajonay. Camping isn't permitted on the island except in the hamlet of El Cedro, where you are allowed to put up your own tent in a private space and enjoy the nature around you to its fullest.

  • Woman doing yoga in the mountains of La Palma (Canary Islands).

    Natural retreats on La Palma.

The island of La Palma, the entire area of which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, is the ideal location to connect your body and mind with pure nature and enjoy its tranquillity. This Canary Island is known for its high number of yoga retreats situated in natural locations, and particularly for how it also offers other activities like hiking and other sports. It even features two natural pools where you can achieve the relaxation you've been dreaming of: La Fajana (Barlovento) and Charco Azul (San Andrés y Sauces). Group walking trips to disconnect, relaxing massages surrounded by nature with birdsong in the background, classes to improve your breathing, balance or posture... all these activities and more are within reach in La Palma almost all year round.
