Viking Festival

Description

Popular festivity recreating the Viking raids suffered by Catoria thousands of years ago. This has been held since 1960 and takes place the first Sunday in August. The most important moment is the disembarkation which takes the form of a simulated Viking attack. A replica of an 11th-century Viking longboat arrives bearing the inhabitants of Catoira dressed as Vikings. Once on the shore there is a re-enactment of the fight and the resistance, at the end of which everyone is drenched in wine. The festivities begin in the morning with performances by local groups in the streets and in the Torres del Oeste, a 9th-century fortified site that is at the heart of the celebration and hosts a mediaeval market. Then comes the disembarkation followed by an open air picnic. The activities continue through the evening with popular dancing accompanied by the typical sounds of the local bagpipes. This is a good opportunity to sample the local gastronomy, such as octopus, grilled sardines and the filled pastry known as 'empanada'.
