Description

Do you want to know the history of Italica, from its founding to the present? How lived their citizens? How were their cities and their homes? What were their entertainment shows? How were his armies?

Italica was the first Roman city founded in Hispania. At the end of the Second Punic War, Scipio Africanus distributed among the soldiers of their plots legions of land in the valley of Betis (now Guadalquivir) river, so that Italica was born as a settlement of veterans (vicus civium romanorum) in the western margin Betis river in 206 BC.

It is during the time of Caesar Augustus when Italica got the status of municipality, with the right to coin money; but it reached its period of greatest splendor during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian Caesars, the late first century and the second century, originating in Italica, which would give great prestige to the old Spanish colony in Rome. Both emperors were particularly generous with their hometown, expanding and revitalizing its economy. Adriano commands to construct the nova urbs, the new city, a city that had only some activity during the second and third centuries, this is the part of the city that is now the archaeological site of Italica. The old city (urbs vetus) is under the town of Santiponce, as this part of the city which had more continuity, arriving until the times of the Muslim occupation.
