This festivity in honour of the Virgin of La Piedad takes place in the towns of Guadix and Baza in Granada. The protagonist is the 'Cascamorras', an extravagantly dressed figure who engages in a harmless paint-slinging battle with his fellow citizens. The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages when a hidden statue of the Virgin of La Piedad was discovered in Baza by a citizen of Guadix. The two communities fell out over who should be its ultimate owners. The figure finally stayed in Baza, and this gave rise to the tradition. Every year on 6 September the 'Cascamorras' goes from Guadix to Baza to reclaim the figure. The inhabitants of Baza try to stop him by throwing paint at him and chasing him through the streets. On 9 September, after his efforts have been thwarted, the 'Cascamorras' returns to Guadix where he meets with exactly the same reception and is once again covered with paint and punished for his failure.
