Santa María del Naranco Church

Description

This unique civic building was built on the orders of King Ramiro I of Asturias to be used as a royal palace. Later converted into a church, it was used as a model for subsequent Romanesque buildings. The church is set on a hillside of Mount Naranco, in a quiet pleasant natural setting. There are two floors: The Crypt and the Upper Room, surrounded by two viewpoints. One of these houses an altar. The inscription on the altar will come as somewhat of a surprise: 23rd June 848 – the date when Ramiro I and his wife had the church built and its consecration date.
