Roman Theatre in Mérida

Constructed in 16 or 15 B.C., it is the best preserved Roman theatre in Europe. It is still used to stage theatre and ballet, recitals and other artistic events. It has a seating capacity for 3,000. The stage has three access doors and a podium over two and a half metres high. In the centre, there is a large stage decorated with marble columns. Every summer since 1933 it has played host to the Festival of Classical Theatre, a unique and unforgettable spectacle.
