Casa Milà house, 'La Pedrera'

Description

This is the best example of the originality of Antonio Gaudí. All its corners are surprising curves and waves. Large windows and iron balconies are also set into the undulating façade. The building is made up of a number of stone walls, with painted courtyards, columns and rooms inside. The roof is notable for its chimneys, which have the appearance of works of art. It is popularly known as "La Pedrera" because it looks like an open-cast quarry. It is one of the most famous buildings from the modernist era. Currently it houses a cultural centre with a wide-ranging programme of exhibitions, events, conferences and debates. It is considered a ground-breaking work for its time and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
