Montserrat Monastery

This monastery is a place of pilgrimage for people to adorn the Virgin of Montserrat. The Virgin is known as "La Moreneta" (the dark one) due to dark colour of her skin. Although tradition dictates arrival on foot, you can also go by car, train or cable car and enjoy some spectacular views. If you have the chance, enter its Basilica when a mass is being celebrated and listen to the "Escolanía de Montserrat", the oldest children's choir in Europe. The monastery is made up of two blocks. One is dedicated to monastery life and the other adapted to visitors and pilgrims. In the surrounding area are various squares and sculptures that have made it an "open-air museum". The Virgin of Montserrat is the patron saint of Catalonia.
