Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos

Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos

It is the only monastery in Spain where the monks' prayers, bidding prayers and mass are completely in Latin and include Gregorian chants. This has made it a centre for spiritual and artistic pilgrimage. The cloister garden houses the famous 25-metre cypress tree planted in 1882 by a French Benedictine monk. The cloister is made up of two levels: the lower and upper cloister. The corners in the lower cloister are decorated with scenes depicting the life of Jesus whilst the capitals are decorated with dragons, centaurs, mermaids… The Museum is home to an important archaeology collection with Celtiberian and Roman pieces, as well as craftwork in precious metals: the Eucharistic Dove is made from gilded silver forged as a single piece and the Chalice of Santo Domingo de Silos in gilded silver. There is an early 18th-century apothecary inside the monastery housing graphic documents, pots for potions and old instruments and tools.
