Royal Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

Description

It has been built three times over its history, and consists of four parts: the temple-basilica, the auditorium building, the Mudejar cloister and the Gothic cloister. It includes a museum of paintings and sculptures with works by El Greco, Zurbarán, Goya and Juan de Flandes. In the Chapel of San Jerónimo hangs one of the most important works by Zurbarán, "The Apotheosis of Saint Jerome". The Monastery houses the Embroidery Museum and an important collection of handwritten books with drawings and images and miniature books. It has been the destination of pilgrimage by important people in the history of Spain such as King Juan Carlos I, the writers Miguel de Cervantes and Miguel de Unamuno, and the explorer Christopher Columbus. According to legend, the Monastery is located at a site where the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd.
