Peñíscola Castle

It stands in the highest part of the city, 64 metres above sea level. Built from carved stone blocks, it looks impregnable and sober. Inside, the rooms have barrel-vaulted ceilings. Visitors can walk around its halls, courtyards and towers. It was once a Papal Seat, an honour it shares with the Vatican and the Palais des Papes in Avignon. Pope Benedict XIII, also known as El Papa Luna (the Moon Pope) in Spanish, turned the castle into a Papal palace and library.
