Uclés Monastery

The monastery is located inside a real fortress, surrounded by walls, bastions, pillars and towers. Jorge Manrique, author of the famous literary work ‘Coplas por la muerte de su padre', was buried inside. Before heading inside, your eyes will be drawn to the entrance doorway with its decoration of armour, helmets, flags and the figure of the Saint James the Apostle. There is a large central courtyard inside surrounded by semi-circular arches. From here you can reach one of the oldest rooms, the refectory or dining room. The 36 coffers show the knights of the Order of Saint James, presided over by Charles V. For more on the history of Uclés and the Order of Saint James, take a trip to the museum located in the side chapels.
